About Mimo Technik
Metal 3D printing is a game-changer for the aerospace industry, manufacturing parts for airplanes, rockets, and satellites. Leading the way is MIMO Technik, a company based in Carson, California, focused on advanced additive manufacturing, mainly metal printing. This company, lead by Jonathan Cohen, is disrupting the industry by servicing some of the most progressive companies on the planet. But this comes with an additional challenge; these companies are also the most demanding in terms of quality.
3D printing is vulnerable to dimensional changes due to the cooling of the material. They make complex calculations to fine-tune their systems and delivery what the customer needs. As a part cools down from the 3D printing machines, the size of the parts change. MIMO Technik needed a way to measure these parts to make sure they comply with the customer's requirements, and the process was not limited to the final part. They also needed a way to refine the parameters on the 3D printers constantly to adapt to different materials' properties.
3D Infotech worked closely with MIMO Technik to address different stages of their production with hardware, software, consulting, and even in-house services.
First, we set up a full 3D scanning system and an inspection pipeline with PolyWorks software; this is their go-to system for all measurements; a portable CMM is very effective in an environment where you have low volume and high variability; classic for 3D printing.
Second, we provided the proper training and consulting to understand their new tools and focus on their unique processes.
Third, provide in-house metrology services at 3D Infotech headquarters in Irvine for those parts that require inspection with higher accuracy devices.
Finally, 3D Infotech and MIMO Technik are in constant collaboration addressing the evolving requirements of aerospace customers. Each project is unique, and some of them pose particular metrology challenges that can be solved only with great teamwork and collaboration.
